UFO + Pattern Review | New Look 6124

I recently challenged myself to two things:
(1) A fabric fast until the end of the year. I have ENTIRELY too much fabric in my stash. So from now until the end of the year, anything I make, the fabric has to come from my stash (other than lining/notions).

(2) To finish up some Unfinished Objects (UFOs). This is one of those UFOs.

I started on this dress some time last year. It was too big and needed some fitting and I just wasn't ready to tackle it at the time. I finally finished it last week.

Here's my pattern review. New Look 6124

Pattern Description: Misses sheath dress with peplum option, and sleeve and neckline variations. New look sewing pattern.

I made View E.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a 14 but ended up having to take quite a bit of slack out.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love the princess seams.

Fabric Used:
This was a UFO from last year. I want to say the fabric was a knit from Joann with a lace design. It was somewhat sheer so I lined it with crepe the closest I could find to the same color.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I fully lined the dress. I'm not 100% but I believe the pattern called for facings.

In hindsight I should have interfaced the sleeves as they are quite floppy.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I would definitely sew this dress again - perhaps without the cap sleeves. I don't think this particular sleeve/length is flattering on me. It's such a classic style. Made in a basic color, this would definitely be a wardrobe builder.

I also plan to make View D.

  3. Hi there! Im having serious issues geting the two side front pieces to match up to the front crntral piece - they dont seem to fit together well and the fabric of the side pieces looks gathered once sewn. Your one looks so smooth and well fitting. Did you have the same problem I do, or do you have any tips for how I could fix this? :)

    1. Hi Justine. I don't remember having any issues. Here is what I do when sewing princess seams. You need to use lots of pins.
      1. Match the beginning and end of your seams and pin.
      2. Match your notches and pin. Usually there are two notches marking the beginning/end of the bust curve.
      3. Once you've pinned the notches, the front side will look like it's longer between the notches than the center front.
      4. Find approximately the half-way point around the curve on the side front and match it with the halfway on the center front. Place a pin there.
      5. Now find the center of the top half of the bust curve and place a pin there.
      6. Find the center of the lower half of the bust curve and place a pin there. Evenly distribute the fullness of the side front along the center front. Use as many pins as you need to hold everything in place and just keep working with one section at a time until it's relatively smooth. I usually use a minimum of 5 pins around the bust.
      7. Now you're ready to sew. Sew with the side front on the BOTTOM. That bottom layer usually feeds through ever so slightly faster than the top layer. If you've distributed and pinned correctly, any small gaps will correct themselves once you start sewing.
      8. So SLOW around the curved area.
      9. Do not remove your pins until they're right up to the presser foot. I don't suggest sewing over them. Just don't remove them to soon because they really do help to keep everything lined up.

That's basically it. I hope that was helpful. Good luck & happy sewing!
