Bonus Dress + Pattern Review | Simplicity 2582

I'm calling this dress a "bonus" because it wasn't initially intended for me.  It was supposed to be for someone else however they didn't follow thru to pay for it. I recently lost 10 lbs. so the dress fits me. BONUS. Fortunately I was only out of less than $20 for fabric + shipping (BONUS) but it was definitely a lesson learned.

Here's my pattern review. Simplicity 2582

Pattern Description: Misses and Miss Petite Dress and Gown

Pattern Sizing:
6-14. I cut the 14 but could have cut a 12. View B.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
This was a project I started a while ago and just recently finished. I don't remember anything bad about the instructions.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like that the design is very simple so the fabric pretty much makes the dress.

Fabric Used:
I used a poly chiffon on clearance at fabric.com. I want to say the fabric was around $3/yard.

I used cotton to underline the skirt. In hindsight I should have used something lighter as it made the dress quite stiff. It's end of summer here so I won't worry about it for now. But probably before I wear it again next summer I will change the lining.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
None.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I probably wouldn't sew this pattern again as I have so many other patterns I haven't sewn yet but I would definitely recommend it to others.

Conclusion:
This dress ended up being a lesson learned for me. I was "commissioned" to make this dress for someone but after ordering the fabric she didn't follow thru to pay for the dress. Lesson learned. However since I recently lost 10 lbs, I decided to complete the dress for myself. And I was only out of about $12 for fabric + shipping. It's a great addition to my summer wardrobe. Before I wear it again I'll need to take in the bodice a bit.

  1. I am currently making this dress but I'm having trouble with the understitching step. I don't understand how to do the understitching with both the neckline and the arm holes stitched together. Can you help me??? Thank you.

    1. Hi Laura. I have found that it's easier to understitch the neckline before sewing the armholes together. And understitch the armholes before you sew the side seams together. You will not be able to do the arm holes in one continuous pass. You'll go from one end to as far as you can to the underarm, break your stitches and repeat the same from the other end.
